Show and tell about places in nature that were, or are, important to you. Big majestic places, or everyday places.
Who: Rod
Where: Savage River Valley, Alaska
Why: Late this past summer, I arrived in Denali National Park with
my friends Ben and Sameet. We did not really know what to expect, but we
knew we wanted to get into the backcountry for a few days. Most of the
backcountry units were already full, but the Savage River Valley was still
open. Little did we know what a magnificent place it would be.
As we ventured into the valley and back, we encountered a huge bull moose,
came across a series of magnificent beaver dams, and watched as the
weather developed over Fang Mountain and rolled down the river valley.
The long, late summer days gave us plenty of time to explore, eat handfuls
of sweet, juicy blueberries, and wonder at the onset of the fall colors.
Hiking over the tundra and crashing through the brush while wondering if a
grizzly bear was lurking around the corner was exhilirating. Thinking
back on experiences like these makes the daily grind of urban life that
much more bearable and reminds me of why we need to protect these wild and
wonderful places.
